How to Get From Belize to Cancun
Flying in and out of Belize can be expensive, which is why many fly to Cancun first and travel to Belize by land after. Doing so can save you nearly $200, which may or may not be worth the extra hassle. Here’s how to get from Belize to Cancun.
There is a nightly bus from Novelo’s Bus Terminal in Belize City to Cancun airport, which stops in Tulum and Playa Del Carmen along the way. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase tickets online or by telephone; you must buy it in person at the bus terminal between 5pm and 7pm; however, tickets can be purchased up to 7 days in advance.
The bus leaves daily at 8:15pm and arrives around 7:00am. Always double check the time! You’ll need to pay $19BZ at the counter at Novelo’s for the bus to the border. When you cross the border into Mexico you’ll pay the remaining fare ($83BZ) and this can be paid in Belizean dollars, Mexican pesos, or U.S. dollars.
You must also pay a departure tax upon leaving Belize, which is about $20USD.
The bus is pretty spacious, but there are a number of stops throughout the night. Do not expect a great night of sleep. The minute you get into a deep sleep you’ll be forced off the bus at the border to go through immigration and purchase the rest of your ticket.
Many tourists say Belize City is dangerous and advise you to stay inside the bus station while you wait. Although the surrounding area looks a bit worn down, it isn’t so bad. My friend and I walked all around the city and had no problems. Belizean people are friendly and don’t cause any trouble with tourists.
