5 Reasons You Should Backpack Ethiopia

Little is known about Ethiopia despite being the origin of mankind and one of Africa’s oldest empires. For many, Ethiopia invokes images of crying hungry babies with swollen bellies shackled in huts. For others, Ethiopia is a proud symbol of defiance being one of the few nations to resist full on colonization by any European power. However you may look at Ethiopia, it is perhaps one of the most fascinating countries you can visit in my opinion. Here are 5 reasons you should visit Ethiopia.

1. Food

Ethiopian food is delicious and distinct from anything you’ve probably ever had. Injera, a sourdough-risen flatbread made from teff flour, is the fundamental piece to any Ethiopian meal. This sponge-like bread is typically eaten with stews containing vegetables and or meat.

Ethiopia is also the land of coffee. Before Ethiopia, I absolutely hated coffee and probably only had it a few times in my life. Coming here however, changed all that. Not only are Ethiopian coffee beans some of the best, but the brewing process is special. Coffee lovers might be in paradise when they visit Ethiopia.

 2. The People

Ethiopians are a naturally loving people and welcoming to foreign guests. I met countless Ethiopians during my journey that were genuinely just interested in who I was and my reasons for coming to Ethiopia. There are very few scams in Ethiopia compared to most large tourist destinations. Many just hope you enjoy their country to the fullest.

3. Backpacker’s Paradise

Travelers typically like that of which is different from their upbringing. Ethiopia is wild, rugged, but very safe at the same time. Ethiopia offers that “wow factor” that intrigues many. You’ll see gorgeous landscapes, nomadic culture, and traditions unique to Ethiopia.

4. The Culture

Ethiopian culture is quite distinct from other African nations. They possess their own form of Christianity, which arrived in the 4th century. There are tons of monasteries throughout the country and in Lalibela lies the Church of Saint George, a magnificent rock-hewn church built in the late 12th century. Ethiopians are also great dancers! They have their own dance unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen. Just visit any place with live music at night and don’t forget to bring your camera!

5. Affordable

Depending on where you’re flying from, the ticket could be a bit pricey, but once you’re here, you won’t have to spend that much. Domestic flights (if you get the local price) and hotels are cheap. If you’re really on a budget, you could get a room for about $10 a night and eat meals under $3.

No lie, this meal was $2 and the fish was freshly caught!
Beer is a dollar or less depending on where you get it
Cheap rides anywhere!

There are many more reasons I could come up with, but you get the overall picture. Ethiopia was one of my more exciting trips and I’d give it a 9/10! Typically, I don’t return to the same country, but with Ethiopia, I’d strongly consider it.
