How to Spend a Layover in Qatar

Doha, Qatar is a popular layover destination for many flights, and many often find themselves here for periods longer than 5 hours, depending on their flight. Despite claims of being one of the premier cities in the Gulf, Qatar is a small country with very little to see. Many travelers complain that it is boring and too hot. I had an 8 hour layover in Qatar on my way back to China and wanted to judge it for myself.

8 hours is a decent amount of time to get a feel for Qatar, but there is nothing here that is an absolute must see. An 8 hour layover is really only like 5 when you take into account getting to the airport two hours before your flight and the time it takes to get to and from the airport. You’ll likely have time for 2-3 spots. Of course, if you have a longer layover, you’ll be able to see more. This is what I did based off my 5 hours.

The Sleepy City of Doha

Most, if not everyone, will likely recommend the Souq Waqif, a market known for its traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Getting here is about a 20 minute ride from the airport and every taxi driver will know it.

You could probably spend an hour or 2 here just looking around. I took this opportunity to stock up on some dates since they are extremely expensive in China. The Souq Waqif pretty neat and is the most culturally looking Arab place in the city. Nice spot for photos!

After the market, I ended up walking down the street for a bit, which doesn’t look too different from any other city.

Qatar is hot! I went in August and it was brutal! The hottest/most humid city I’ve ever been to in my life. My button up shirt was completely soaked. Stock up on liquids while you’re in town.

I kept walking until I reached Cornichea, a long seaside promenade that curves around Doha Bay where you can see the city’s skyscrapers. You’ll find many western expats on this strip running and rollerblading. Cornichea is very similar to The Bund in Shanghai or the Promenade in Hong Kong.

After Cornichea, I went back to the Souq to have dinner and smoke hookah with a friend who also had a layover in Qatar at the same time. Later, we both headed to the airport. Doha is a pretty neat airport, very modern and clean! You can also do a bit of shopping here.
