Jamaica Beyond The Resorts
So much of Jamaica’s tourism is based around all-inclusive resorts, such as Montego Bay. Each year, millions of tourists flood into Jamaica, and many never leave these resorts, resulting in a very cookie cutter like experience. Don’t get me wrong, there are some dangerous parts in Jamaica, and the homicide rate ranks as one of the highest in the world, so it’s understandable that tourists want to steer as far as possible from these areas. However, like any place, if you exercise caution, you should be fine.
So….. What do you even do in Jamaica if you’re not at a resort?
1) See Blue Mountain
This is the longest mountain range in Jamaica and my favorite place in the country. It’s a sea of green, lush forest with incredible views. You can really kick back and enjoy a beer here. You’ll likely be one of the few in this area.
2) Tour the streets
If you follow this blog, you know I’m a huge advocate of just walking around and getting lost in the city. It’s something I literally do in every country. With Jamaica, you’ll have to be more cautious as some parts, such as the southern part of Kingston, is ripe with crime. The beauty about walking the streets in this country is the culture. Food grilling on the corner, loud dancehall music, vendors selling goods, it has it all..
3) Have Lunch at Strawberry Hill
Strawberry Hill is a luxury mountaintop hotel with incredible views. This place is a little touristy, but the all you can eat buffet and spectacular views are worth it!
4) Go out and Get Authentic Jamaican Food!
Technically, you could eat Jamaican food on a resort, but resorts typically alter the taste to suit the taste buds of their guests. Go out in the streets and get you a Jamaican beef patty, try curry goat, get some real jerk chicken! It really is worth the hype.
5) Visit Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios is a chill, laid back beach town that should be on everyone’s radar. There are plenty of activities available for you to do here.
6) Visit Devon’s House
Devon’s House is residence of the George Stiebel, Jamaica’s first black millionaire. Everyday locals gather here with their family to kick back and relax. There are tons of shops here and a few bakeries. Surprisingly however, one of the main attractions here is the ice cream. The ice cream shop at Devon’s house, according to the shop itself, is one of the top 10 places to have ice cream in the world! Imagine that!
Regardless of what you choose to do in Jamaica, you’ll likely have a great experience. The friendly locals, warm vibes, sunny skies, and amazing food all make for an excellent vacation!
