Discover Lithuania: Best Places to Visit and Local Travel Tips
Lithuania was the final stop on my journey through Finland, Estonia, and Latvia. Before my trip, I read several blogs that described Lithuania as the least impressive of the Baltic countries (compared to Estonia and Latvia). However, I found Lithuania to be far better than advertised. Among Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, I felt Vilnius was the most vibrant and livable city for an expat. Additionally, it was the most affordable of the three. Lithuania also has a distinct Soviet influence, which reminded me of my time in Belarus years ago.

Best Places to see in Vilnius
1) KBG Museum

The KGB Museum in Vilnius, located in the former KGB headquarters, is a powerful reminder of Lithuania’s Soviet past. The museum offers a deep dive into the history of Soviet occupation, showcasing exhibits on the KGB’s oppressive tactics, the resistance movements, and the human rights violations that took place. The highlight of the museum is the preserved KGB prison cells in the basement, where visitors can see the conditions under which dissidents were held and tortured.

This is the most impactful KGB museums in the Baltic region, as it provides an educational experience that shouldn’t be missed.

2) Gediminas’ Tower

Gediminas’ Tower is the only remaining part of the Upper Castle. It stands proudly on a hill and has become a symbol of the city.
3) Vilnius Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town is one of the largest preserved medieval old towns in Europe. Its narrow, cobbled streets are lined with beautiful Gothic and Renaissance buildings. It’s a perfect spot to stroll, shop, or grab a coffee.

4) Church of St. Anne

The Church of St. Anne is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, located in the heart of Vilnius’ Old Town. Built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it stands as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Lithuania.
5) Uzupis

Uzupis is an artistic district that declared itself an independent republic in 1997. It’s a quirky, bohemian neighborhood with galleries, cafés, and a sense of freedom.

6) Trakai Castle

Trakai Castle is a medieval fortress that dates back to the 14th century, built by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The castle played an important role in the defense of Lithuania against external threats, including the Teutonic Knights.

7) The Gate of Dawn
The Gate of Dawn is not only a historical city gate but also houses a chapel with the famous Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Gate of Dawn. The icon is a revered religious symbol in Lithuania, believed to have miraculous powers.

Thoughts?
Lithuania was enjoyable and definitely my favorite Baltic country. It’s also way cheaper than Estonia or Latvia. You can enjoy good food, decent hotels, and local experiences without dropping a ton of cash. All in all, Lithuania surprised me in the best way. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t shout for attention but deserves it.
